WHAT IS THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE?

  • votes in smaller states count more than votes in larger states

  • people are discouraged from voting because some states are always red and some states are always blue

  • "winner takes all" of a state's electoral votes (in 48 states), no matter their margin of victory

  • winner of popular vote can lose election

  • unnecessary & obsolete

The Electoral College is an outdated institution. What was once intended to be helpful to our growing country is now causing more problems than it solves. A vote in smaller states counts more than a vote in larger states, giving the smaller states more power. Furthermore, a candidate who wins the popular vote can ultimately lose the election.

With the winner-takes-all system 48/50 states have in place, the winner of a state’s popular vote gets all of that state’s electoral votes, no matter their margin of victory. To eradicate the Electoral College, 3/4 of the states must ratify a Constitutional amendment. States can also individually decide what to do with their electoral votes.

By signing this petition, I agree that the Electoral College needs to be abolished. Please take a stand for a smarter system.
